J.R. Henderson Must Really Like Sushi

July 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Someone might need to redo the captioning in this photo to read J.R. Sakuragi in Japanese…

Former UCLA Bruin J.R. Henderson, a player on that reneging groom’s national championship team in 1995, has apparently been playing professional basketball for quite some time in Japan of all places. And how much has Henderson immersed himself in Japanese culture over that period of time? Well, enough that he decided to change his name from J.R. Henderson to J.R. Sakuragi. There’s nothing like changing your name to make it sound like you’re the leader of the foot clan to prove how much you really love a country.

Then again, maybe J.R. just got sick of hearing his previous last name said with a constant redundancy. I know if I had the last name Henderson, I’d be annoyed if everytime my coach wanted to call me over to talk, I had to hear him address me as “Henderson-son”. Either way, I can’t give this subject any more of my time, because the bar for name changes in professional sports has been set far too high by the artist formerly known as Brian Williams, when he changed his name to Bison Dele. And for your information, the subsequent disaster for Dele on board the ‘Hakuna Matata’, which apparently does not mean a problem free philosophy but rather dissapearing forever at sea, has not prevented me from making jokes about the situation. It’s just too absurd to ignore. It’s not as if we’re discussing something sore, like illegally killing dogs…
