VIDEO: Where Carmelo Anthony and Francisco Elson Learned To Fight Like Girls

July 15th, 2007 · No Comments

I remember this melee between the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards a few years back, but I had totally forgot about it until I crossed a YouTube clip of it recently. The video features Larry Hughes giving a little shove to Kirk Hinrich propelling him into Luol Deng quicker than Paris Hilton propelled herself back into a drunken bender after getting out of jail. Nothing’s that notable about a 3 year old NBA fight, right?

Wrong. You may recall Carmelo Anthony’s role in the Madison Square Melee during this past NBA season. The lasting image of Anthony was his frantic backpeddling away from the skinniest guy on the court after Anthony threw a haymaker. In other words, the lasting image was of ‘Melo fighting like he had a hymen. You also may remember Reggie Evans and his ‘method’ to slow down Chris Kaman during the 2006 NBA Playoffs (listen to Ernie Johnson’s cookie jar comment and Barkley’s reaction - priceless). In other words, the lasting image of Evans is that he’s built in the John Amaechi mold of fighting.

Check out Brendan Haywood’s busch-league play and tell me if it doesn’t remind you of a certain snitch-hater. Then check out Eddy Curry’s attack method on a pinned-down Haywood and tell me if it doesn’t remind you of epic benchwarmer Evans. So we can thank the Bulls and Wizards for officially making fighting like girls acceptable in the NBA. And I don’t mean fighting like Laila Ali or Christie Martin. I mean fighting like this.
