In a gastronomical display of sheer eating prowess, American hero and competitive eater Joey Chestnut defeated previous champion Takeru Kobayashi today at the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest. The new world champ downed a record 66 hot dogs and buns, or HDBs, to earn the belt, compared to Kobayashi’s 63.
Before the event, Kobayashi had been complaining of persistent jaw pain and jaw arthritis. Allegedly he had been unable to open his jaw wide enough to put two fingers inside his mouth, which as you may imagine, could hamper one’s ability to cram dozens of hot dogs in it. Nonetheless, he put up a valiant effort, breaking his previous personal record of 59 dogs but unable to match Chestnut’s onslaught.
It seems only fitting that the hot dog champion should be a native of this great land, where the hot dog was pioneered. Congratulations, Joey Chestnut - You make us proud to be Americans.
