For the beleaguered Detroit Lions, arguably the worst-performing franchise in modern NFL history, a winning season would be nothing less than a miracle. While most Lions fans are wrapped in a blanket of hopeless cynicism, there are a dedicated few who insist each season will be the one in which the Lions “turn it around.” Recent comments from an (over?)-confident Jon Kitna will reinforce those beliefs:
“See, that was 10 games before I saw the schedule, too,” the quarterback told WDFN-AM (1130) this week. “I’ll keep to myself what I think we actually will win. But it’s more than 10 games.”
My guess is that Kitna and the boys will come out and put up an impressive show against Oakland in the first game of the season, planting that tiny, bright seed of hope deep within the heart of each and every Lions fan out there. And maybe, just maybe, they can pull off a win against the Vikings at home in the next game, allowing that seed to grow. With the bandwagon set in place, and fans across Metro Detroit primed to jump on, the Lions will undoubtedly blow the next several games in the respective final seconds, crushing that hope beneath the brutal heel of reality, also known as “The Matt Millen Era.”
Such is the way of the Detroit Lions.
