Sean Casey Starts His Chase To Break Barry Bonds Single Season Homerun Record

June 20th, 2007 · No Comments

Just 69 (heh, heh) more homers to go for Sean to get a piece of the record this season

You know, when Mark McSteroid started getting close to Roger Maris’ then single season home run record of 61 in 1998, I was one of the many fans doing their best Stevie Wonder impressions by not seeing McSteroid’s physique go from Bruce Banner to the Incredible Hulk. When Blow-Up-Head Bonds broke McSteroid’s record by smashing 70 homers in a season just a few years later, I’d say my level of interest was about on par with the general American population’s interest in how Wesley Snipes’ tax evasion trial plays out.

But right now, there’s a major home run chase I’m interested in. Detroit Tigers‘ first baseman Sean Casey has earned my respect with how he’s going to try and chase down Bonds’ single season mark. Casey hit his first homer of the 2007 campaign yesterday against the Washington Nationals, officially starting his pursuit of the record a mere 70 games into the season. While cheaters like McSteroid and Bonds lowered the degree of difficulty to break the single season home run record by using performance enhancing drugs, Sean Casey upped the difficulty level in his pursuit by deciding to start his chase almost half-way through the season.

Big props to the real mayor of Detroit, Sean Casey, for brining some integrity back to the game of baseball. Unless of course Casey’s been trying to hit home runs all season and just couldn’t do it, but I think that sounds about as realistic as Lindsay Lohan being a sober DD for the night.
