More fighting to save the NHL? Great idea! What’s the next suggestion, Don? Perhaps more scoring?

Canadian hockey aficionado Don Cherry recently opined during the Stanley Cup Finals that he feels hockey needs more fighting to regain some of its popularity, which is disappearing faster than Larry David’s bankroll.

I love Don Cherry. Used to love watching Don Cherry’s Grapevine on CBC. But in terms of obviousness, that statement is about on par with Cherry saying “The NHL needs to contract all franchises south of the Mason-Dixon line” or a family member telling a female relative “I don’t think I like this Stephen Grant guy you’re supposed to be dating”. Personally, I’m waiting for Cherry to tell us that Paris Hilton belongs in the Big House. I certainly couldn’t have figured that out on my own.

Nevertheless, I do agree with Don. After all, who doesn’t love seeing a former alcoholic cocaine user and a guy once charged with assault and battery slug it out while dancing on skates? Forget sending elite players to OHL teams to get ready for the NHL, I say we have Bob Probert open up an academy for how to fight in the NHL.
